This year, the Office for Seniors' campaign runs from 9 to 30 June. The campaign highlights practical actions everyone can take to help prevent elder abuse, with a key focus on encouraging people to set up Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPAs).
“An EPA enables older New Zealanders to choose someone they trust to make decisions about their personal care and finances if they become unable to do so themselves,” says Diane Turner, Director of the Office for Seniors.
“Establishing an EPA is a crucial step anyone can take to safeguard older people’s rights. It's vital for protecting their dignity and overall wellbeing.”
Diane says this year’s campaign builds on successful strategies over the last nine years.
“Our approach is to reach more people than ever by using diverse channels, including YouTube, Facebook, Google Search, television, radio, and print media. We use videos and graphics to illustrate the signs of elder abuse and how subtle they can sometimes be.”
“Our key message remains that everyone can play a part in preventing elder abuse.”
For confidential support or to discuss concerns about elder abuse, contact the Elder Abuse Response Service at 0800 32 668 65 (0800 EA NOT OK).
