Jane is a prominent member and past president of the Whakatū (Nelson) branch of the Māori Women's Welfare League (Te Rōpū Wāhine Māori Toko i te Ora). She has been involved with the league for many years, and her work often focuses on promoting and preserving Māori language and culture. Jane has been involved in initiatives to promote these within her community, including helping to establish the first te kohanga reo (Māori language preschool) in Nelson.
